PEI company finds sweet new market
Island Abbey Foods from Montague, PEI has launched the world’s first candy made out of 100% pure PEI honey. What stared as a basement operation for creator John Rowe has blossomed into a full-fledged business providing local jobs and global business opportunities.
Six generations ago Rowe’s family came to PEI and since then the agricultural sector has been their passion. Now the family business is flourishing as sales for their products soar. A few years ago Rowe was searching for an alternative to the sugar cube that involved honey. The result came from a lab experiment and has turned into a full fledge success story. Marketed under the Honibe brand, The Honey Drop is available online and is also sold throughout PEI as well as the rest of North America.
Their newest product, The Honey Delight has the prestige of being the world’s first hard candy made with pure honey. The candy was a big hit at this year's San Francisco Fine Food Show and has already enjoyed success at boutique retailers in the US.
The company also has had a sweet spots on many media outlets including CBC News, who has filmed a video on how the candy is manufactured. Follow this link to view the video.
