Junos descend on St. John’s despite weather
The Canadian music industry has begin its invasion of Newfoundland’s capital city despite freezing temperatures and a spring snowstorm. Several artists have been delayed, but the excitement has been building all week as musicians, media and fans struggle to land safely in St. Johns for the gala ceremony Sunday night.
This week St. John’s began ramping up the celebrations as they count down to host the 2010 Juno awards. Amongst the Atlantic Canadian nominees are Enfield Nova Scotia native Classified, New Brunswick’s Julie Doiron, and lone NL nominee Amila Curran. The awards and related events are expected to inject more than $11 million into the local economy.
Brad Bastow of ‘Black Car Service’ has seen the economic effects already on his independently owned limousine service. The car of choice for record companies has been high end SUVs which are in limited supply on the rock.
"They call up and they ask for five or six of them for the ceremony but unfortunately there just isn't that many in town," Bastow said.
