Alexa McDonough was announced as the interim President of Mount Saint Vincent University on Tuesday. The once only female MP will hold the position for one year as the University searches for a permanent replacement for Kathryn Laurin who has now accepted a position at the University of British Columbia.
McDonough said she's a big fan of the university, which was started by the Sisters of Charity to provide higher education for women. The school is now completely co-ed, with about 5,000 full- and part-time students.
University spokesperson said that they asked McDonough to take the position because of her strong leadership skills. The Mount is hoping that she will also raise the profile of the school as well as their capital campaign to raise $16 million for Canada’s first chair in learning disabilities.
