Renewable Energy: Next-level initiatives from ABS 2011

ABS guest reporter Laura Phillips - Conversations around clean energy are gaining momentum in Atlantic Canada. With increased involvement of government and business parties are accelerating the shift towards long term clean energy trends, and the resources and economic opportunity of Eastern regions are being realized. Developments such as Newfoundland's Lower Churchill Project and DSTN's facilities in Nova Scotia are key-contributors to greater initiative in Canada as a whole. However, speakers at the 4th Annual Atlantic Business Summit let out a clear call to action: renewable energy at large is a task that requires a more unified stance. Meet Newfoundland and Labrador's new Premier

Kathy Dunderdale was sworn in as Newfoundland and Labrador's tenth premier following the resignation of Danny Williams on December 03. Dunderdale is the first female Premier in the province's history and the sixth female in Canada to lead a province or territory. After being sworn in as premier, Dunderdale announced that she would not be seeking the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party and therefore would only serve in the role of Premier till a leadership election was held in the Spring of 2011. NL and NS sign hydroelectric megaproject

Newfoundland and Nova Scotia’s premiers, Danny Williams and Darrell Dexter, respectively, have announced a deal on Thursday to develop the Lower Churchill River hydroelectric megaproject. The $6.2- billion, 35 year deal is expecting to have power flowing by late 2016, providing a more stable price of electricity to citizens of both provinces. Read more
