Young Monctonians turn 100 year old hat factory into hub for creative entrepreneurs

In October 2009, aspiring filmmaker Dan Gillis and his business partner, Alex Mercer, examined an derelict warehouse on Botsford Street in the heart of Moncton, New Brunswick. A spirit of community building and entrepreneurship came over him as he pushed through mountains of used office furniture. In just under two years, Gillis has not only finished his first feature film, but he is now co-owner of the building that inspired him. He has capped off his vision with the launch of Botsford Station – Atlantic Canada’s newest hub for young entrepreneurs and artists. Read more

Big Challenges, Big Opportunities: NB Premier David Alward in Toronto

Monday, February 14th wasn’t a typical Valentine’s Day for those gathered at the Delta Chelsea hotel in Toronto. New Brunswick Premier David Alward, on his first out-of-province tour after being elected to office, was in the city to speak with East Coast Connected members about the challenges facing New Brunswick, and the opportunities in the face of those challenges. The Premier covered a lot of ground in his far-ranging morning address, and during the Q&A following, but his messages all had a common theme: engage citizens in the process of government, and be strategic in your vision for the province. New Brunswick native reaches for the stars

Ten year old Kathryn Gray of Fredericton, New Brunswick, has been confirmed as the youngest person to discover a super nova star. A supernova is a stellar explosion that causes a burst of radiation which can briefly outshine an entire galaxy, before fading from view over several weeks or months. Read more

21inc launches Emerging Leaders Festival, hosts Ideas Festival

In late November 2010, 21inc hosted the first ever Emerging Leaders Summit, followed by the Ideas Festival at the Fairmount Algonquin in St. Andrews, NB. This event featured 54 Atlantic Canadian leaders drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds, including industry, government and non-profit sectors. Read more

NS couple gives away millions in lottery winnings

Allen and Violet Large of Truro NS are receiving worldwide attention for what they perceive as doing the right thing: donating most of their $11.2-million lottery jackpot to local charities. Their winning Lotto 6-49 numbers were picked last July and last week they officially accepted their win from Atlantic Lottery Corporation’s headquarters in Moncton. After picking up the check and announcing their newfound interest in philanthropy, their phone started ringing off the hook. Read more

University of New Brunswick Celebrates 225th Anniversary

On Thursday, Sept. 23, the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada’s oldest English-language university, celebrated 225 years of achievement by awarding five honorary degrees to outstanding Canadians at the Royal Conservatory’s Koerner Hall in Toronto. 'A Celebration of Canadian Spirit', Hosted by Frank McKenna (LLB '74, LLD '78) and Anne Murray (B. Ed '66, D. Litt. '78), payed tribute to UNB's legacy with impassioned speeches, stories, fanfare and celebration. Read more

Innovacorp launches Entrepreneur in Residence program

Innovacorp, a provincial Crown corporation in Nova Scotia, focused on emerging high potential technology companies, has launched an Entrepreneur in Residence program. Jevon MacDonald was welcomed to the Innovacorp team as the first entrepreneur-in-residence. MacDonald is originally from PEI and is the founder and business developer of several software and services companies. Read more
